A Safer More Efficient Left Turn Signal – Soon residents will notice a new standard for traffic signals. New traffic signals will include a flashing yellow arrow. The flashing arrow indicates a left turn is allowed, but must yield to oncoming traffic.
A national study demonstrated that drivers found flashing yellow left-turn arrows more understandable than traditional yield-on-green indicators.
The first of these traffic signals will be used at the intersections of 19th Street and Garnett Road, and at 86th Street and 129th E Ave. These signals will be gradually phased in to replace traditional circular green signals. The new signals provide additional opportunities for a driver to make a safe left turn, and will provide traffic engineers more opportunities to handle variable traffic volumes.
