Question:

Is there any way that I can relieve the burning in my throat from acid reflux/heartburn in the middle of the night?

Answer:

Yes!  Acid reflux, particularly at night when lying down, can easily reach all the way into the back of the throat and around the vocal cords.  This is called laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and can cause many symptoms, including a burning in the throat, a “globus sensation” like something is stuck in the throat, chronic cough, difficulty swallowing, voice changes and many more.  Frequently medications, both over the counter and prescription, are needed to control the reflux.  However, there are lifestyle modifications that can help as well.  The following are a few steps to consider.  A more detailed discussion can be carried forth with your healthcare provider, particularly if symptoms persist.

1.)  Avoid eating two to three hours before going to bed.  If the stomach is full of food and the acid needed to digest it, it is easy for some to escape through the esophagus while lying down to sleep.  This single step alone can cause dramatic changes in many cases.

2.)  Avoid tobacco and food/drinks that can cause reflux.  Acidic foods (citrus, tomato, etc.), mint flavored foods, coffee, alcohol, chocolate and carbonated drinks are just a few of the common offenders.

3.)  Avoid tight clothing around the midsection.

4.)  Weight loss.  Sometimes 5-10 pounds can make all the difference.

5.)  Elevate the head of bed.  This one can be tricky.  The floor support of the head of the bed needs to be raised a few inches in order to have the entire body sleeping on a slight incline.  This does NOT mean adding an extra pillow.  Extra pillows are not effective because they can add pressure to the midsection and actually increase reflux.

Hopefully these steps help with your reflux symptoms.  Persistent symptoms should be discussed with your primary care provider or with a specialist.
