Q: What causes anemia during pregnancy and can it be avoided or controlled with diet?
A: Anemia is a condition that is caused by a deficiency in red blood cells (RBC). There are numerous causes, including genetics, but it usually is due to a lack of nutrients needed for production of RBC, most often, iron. During pregnancy, the fetus also requires these same nutrients for production of its RBC, increasing the likelihood of anemia. Making sure that you get plenty of iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12, which are the three key elements needed for production of RBC, will go a long way in preventing anemia during pregnancy
