Question:
At what point past the 40th week of a pregnancy do you recommend inducing labor with drugs?
Answer:
As time passes after your due date, the risk of pregnancy complication steadily increases, including the risk of fetal death. After 41 weeks, your doctor will likely offer induction of labor, or alternatively, put the baby on the heart rate monitor and measure the amount of amniotic fluid around the baby to ensure he/she is still doing well. The absolute cutoff for delivery is 42 weeks.
