Q: What is a “false pregnancy” and how does it occur?
A: A “false pregnancy,” or “blighted ovum,” occurs when a fertilized egg implants in the uterus, but an embryo never forms. It is one of the most common causes of early (less than eight weeks) miscarriage. Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done to help prevent or treat this condition. It likely occurs because of fertilization of a poor egg or sperm, or due to mistakes that occur early in the cell division and development of the embryo.
