A man involved in the high-speed chase last June has filed a $200,000 lawsuit against the officers that subdued him and the City of Owasso.
Cody Mathews, 25, led authorities on a chase down Highway 169 in June 2015 from Tulsa to Nowata driving an alleged stolen truck.
Wednesday, Mathews filed a petition against the City of Owasso, Owasso Police Department and the Owasso jail as well as police officers for assault and battery.
Allegations of excessive force surfaced after police arrested Mathews. The now former Owasso officer, Mike Denton, was placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation due to the claims. He has since been fired, terminated twice following alleged use-of-force policy violations.
The City of Owasso reports that Denton was terminated in March of this year following an Owasso Police Department investigation into his conduct. His termination has since proceeded to arbitration.
Denton was also fired in 2011 by the Owasso Police Department on allegations that he violated the Owasso Police Department’s use-of-force policy in another incident that was recorded on police video, but he was later reinstated by an arbitrator.
Owasso Office Andrew Eubanks is also named in the petition.
