Tired of putting all those chemicals into your garden and flower beds? Highly respected “Tropical John” Thomas of the Sunday morning talk radio show “The Dirt Doctor” will be the special guest speaker teaching a class on Organic Gardening on Saturday, April 27 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm at Thompson’s General Store. Located in Owasso at 10010 N. Garnett Road, Thompson’s has been in business since 1990 providing a wide selection of products including a large organic gardening section. “When we started our business 23 years ago, organic products were not widely accepted or available. People thought we were a little crazy when we suggested they purchase fish emulsion for their garden!” explained, Stevie Thompson, co-owner of Thompson’s.
Most people don’t realize the number of benefits realized from organic gardening. Aside from the obvious lack of exposure to chemicals both topically and ingested from fresh produce contaminated by toxins, organic gardening helps prevent the loss of topsoil as well as helping to sustain and nourish beneficial soil organisms. Toxic runoff and water pollution, soil poisoning and wildlife deaths occur when chemicals are overused. “If a natural way to control pests and disease is available and effective, people should be educated so they can make wise choices when is comes to how they want to garden,” said Ben Thompson, co-owner of Thompson’s.
The seminar on Saturday will discuss, Soil Amendments, Soil Foods, Fertilization Schedule, Foliar Feeding and Organic Weed, Disease and Pest Control. John Thomas or Tropical John as he is known was bitten by the gardening bug back in 1973 when he did an Eagle Scout project where he landscaped a small section of a nursing home. He has worked in the gardening and landscaping industry since 1975 and has been committed to changing how people garden since 1988 when some “nut” on the radio recommended using DE (diatomaceous earth) as a natural way to kill fleas. That “nut” was Howard Garrett who has influenced thousands in how they use natural products when they garden. Tropical John will be available to answer questions after the seminar.
