Coach John Bruce Scott, son of John and Ada (Jennings) Scott, was born on August 8, 1939 in Wewoka, Oklahoma and succumbed to cancer on December 8, 2018.
John attended Justice Grade School, Cowart Junior High School, and graduated from Wewoka High School in 1956. He received his Bachelor’s degree from East Central University in 1961, and earned a Master’s degree from Northeastern University in 1968.
Sports were always an integral part of his life. In 1956 John was a member of the South All-State team and chosen to play in the Oklahoma Oil Bowl game.
His success on the football field provided John with college scholarships to Oklahoma A&M (OSU), NEO A&M, and East Central State.
His involvement with sports also provided him with a thirty-eight-year career that included teaching and coaching at Morland High School, Morland, Kansas, coaching at Sapulpa High School and Moore High
School, and retiring in 2000 after serving as Athletic Director at Owasso High School for twenty-three years.
Being chosen as one of the 1971 North All-Star football coaches and being a founding member of the Oklahoma Athletic Directors Association in 1976 were just two of his memorable accomplishments.
His support of OSU, the St. Louis Cardinals, and his unwavering dedication to the Detroit lions, provided many lively discussions with his family and friends around the “Liars Table.”
For his friends, John was the go-to person when it came to sports or movie trivia. It was not uncommon for him to receive a phone call asking him the name of a certain player, or the score of a specific game, or the actor who
starred in movie. He always knew the answer. He always had a good story to tell and his jovial laughter was unmistakable.
Although sports were a part of his life, they paled in comparison to his devotion to his family and his God. His love for his family was evident by his willingness to provide any kind of support that was needed, and he never wavered in his belief that God was in control.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ada, grandparents, John and Sarah Scott and Perry and Kathryn Jennings, sister, Bette Rutherford, brother, Hollis Scott, wife Carolyn (Anderson} Scott and son, Stan Scott.
