Joseph Edward Schraad, 86, passed from this earthly realm to his heavenly home on July 10, 2024. He left surrounded by his beloved wife and children after a brief battle with Lewy body dementia. Joe was born January 8, 1938 in Le Mars, Iowa to Bernard Schraad and Margaret Schraad, who preceded him in death. He was the youngest of 5 children. Joe’s childhood was spent on the farm, and as he grew older, he joined the Army and then worked for the Tulsa airport for 41 years until his retirement.
Joe married Phyllis Jones on May 13, 1989. Together, they built a life they loved in Owasso, Oklahoma, where they remained married for 35 years. The patriarch of the Schraad family, Joe leaves behind a legacy of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In his later years, he was affectionately known as “Papa.” Joe loved fishing and hunting, but perhaps his greatest achievement in life was raising upstanding young men who grew up to love their own wives and children, becoming faithful men of God like himself.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Tom Schraad and Bill Schraad; brother-in-law Virgil Schutz; and stepson, Mike Jones. Left to cherish his memory until they are reunited again include the love of his life, Phyllis Schraad; three sons, Jim Schraad (Karen), John Schraad (Regan); and Joey Schraad (Julie); grandchildren, Michael Schraad (Lauren), Brian Schraad (Sara), Clayton Calhoun, Ben Schraad (Megan), Lindsay Keeling (Scott), Daniel Schraad (Brenda), Isabella Schraad, William Schraad, Marty Jones (Cyriece), and Michelle Dixon (Jon); daughter-in-law, Trena McCoy-Jones; sisters, Mary Schutz and Jane Melvin; and five great-grandchildren with one on the way.
A rosary will be held at 6pm Monday, July 15, 2024 at St. Henry Catholic Church in Owasso with a Mass of a Christian burial following Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at 11am at the church. Interment will follow at Graceland Memorial Park Cemetery.
