04/01/2025 – Owasso Community Resources (OCR) is preparing for a leadership transition as Executive Director Randy Cowling announces his retirement, effective August 2025.
Cowling has served as OCR’s executive director since 2014, leading the organization through a decade of significant growth. Under his leadership, OCR expanded its reach, providing essential groceries to more than 600 families each month and distributing nearly 800,000 pounds of food annually. He played a key role in increasing the organization’s grocery partners from two to 13, ensuring families had access to fresh produce, dairy, and deli items.
Beyond his work at OCR, Cowling has dedicated 45 years to nonprofit organizations and journalism, previously working with the Claremore Daily Progress, Owasso Reporter, and newspapers across multiple states. He is a co-founder of Assist OK, a shared client database that reduces barriers to services, and has served as both president and vice chair of the organization. He has also been a board member of the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma and is an award-winning journalist in editorial writing and photojournalism.
Following his retirement, Cowling and his wife, Pam, plan to travel and spend time with their six grandchildren.
Stepping into the role of executive director is Mendi Burns, OCR’s current development director. Burns, who has been with the organization since 2018, has played a crucial role in securing grants and donations while expanding the volunteer base and strengthening partnerships with local schools, businesses, and organizations.
With a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, Burns is also an active member of the Owasso Band Patrons and the Rotary Club of Owasso. She will officially assume her new role on September 1, 2025, and is eager to continue advancing OCR’s mission of providing help and hope to those in financial crisis.
