Question:
What makes a pregnancy “high risk”?
Answer:
Your doctor will take a detailed history and determine if your pregnancy should be considered high risk. There are many things can put a pregnancy in this category. For example, if you have hypertension or diabetes, that can make your pregnancy high risk. Also, certain conditions during pregnancy can make yours high risk such as preeclampsia, placental abnormalities, fetal growth restriction or problems with the amniotic fluid levels, to name just a few.
If your pregnancy is high risk you will likely be referred to a maternal fetal medicine specialist. This is an OB/Gyn that specializes in high-risk pregnancies. It is important to give your provider a full and complete health history and get regular prenatal care to carefully monitor your pregnancy.
