Release: Owasso Police Department

07/01/2020 – At approximately 10 AM on Wednesday, the Owasso E911 Center received calls from neighbors describing an adult male attacking an adult female in the driveway of a home located near 8th and North Elm St in Owasso.

The caller went on to say that the male was choking the female.  The first officers arrived in less than 1 minute of the original call, however as they drove towards the home the suspect quickly entered a red pick-up and fled the scene towards responding officers.

One of the officers was able to exit his car and deploy Stop Sticks (Tire Deflation Devices) and deflated one of the suspect’s tires as he passed by.  The suspect led officers on a vehicle pursuit southbound on US169 into Tulsa.  Speeds were kept relatively low due to the deflated tire on the suspect vehicle, however, the suspect was still a danger to other drivers.

The suspect attempted to take the southbound Pine Street exit ramp from US169 however the instability of the vehicle caused him to swerve into the elevated curb and the suspect vehicle rolled over several times into the grassy area adjacent to the highway.  During one of the revolutions of the truck, the suspect was ejected through the driver’s door window.

The vehicle continued to roll away and down the embankment.  The suspect, obviously in great pain, immediately surrendered at that point.  EMSA and Tulsa Fire were summoned to the scene where they took the suspect to a metro hospital in “Serious Condition” where he is now being guarded.  The suspect; 39yo David Bender of Tulsa will be facing charges of Domestic Assault and Battery by Strangulation and Felony Eluding, as well as other related charges.

He will be transported to the Tulsa County Jail upon his release from the hospital.  Requests to assist in the vehicular pursuit were made to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the Tulsa Police Department, however, the pursuit ended prior to their arrival. End.
