At Melton Automotive Sales the current ad campaign is “Jump On It!” The great news, however, is they won’t jump on you. While car salesmen are known for pouncing on every customer that enters the lot, Melton doesn’t have salesmen. They don’t need them.
Amy Gordon of Melton Sales explains the experience. “What do salesmen do for you at a dealership? Salesmen stalk you on the lot,” she says. “Then the salesmen go inside to get the keys for the vehicle you are interested in. While they are inside, you find another one you are interested in. The cycle can go on and get frustrating. Ours are all unlocked all the time. No need for salesmen.”
While at the typical dealership, salesmen quote the price of the vehicle, at Melton, the lowest prices are posted all the time.
Salesmen go on test drives with customers—not at Melton. “It’s kind of creepy,” Gordon says. “No one is comfortable. We know you will bring the car back.”
And lastly, salesmen take you to the cubicle and run back and forth to their manager to get a deal together. At Melton, someone will sit with you on a couch and input information into an iPad to get paperwork finalized.
The difference is family. Started in 1946 as a tractor and feed store by George Melton, Gordon’s great grandfather, it is still operated by the fourth generation of Meltons on the corner of 4th and Lynn Riggs in Claremore.
We are truly a family business, Gordon says. “Rob Melton is buyer of all program vehicles; Larry Melton is service and parts director; Robert Melton is sales manager; Greg Melton does sales and orders new vehicles; Jake Melton does recon; Sandy Melton is office manager; and me, Amy Gordon—I get to do everything the others don’t want to.”
Thanks to the family element, buying a vehicle at Melton becomes a comfortable, stress-free experience. “As we like to say, Granddad paid for the building, we sell cars for fun!” Gordon says. “We love cars, and because of the low overhead, we can sell them cheaper and not have to haggle with customers. It’s an easy process.”
