Native American Section 184 Loan Program suspended due to federal government shutdown

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. —  Due to the United States Federal Government shutdown, individuals currently in the application process or wishing to apply for a Native American Section 184 Loan Program should be aware that applications are not being processed until further notice.

Native American Section 184 Loans are controlled by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Applications being processed and funds being distributed are contingent on the federal government being operational.

“The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation is disheartened that Congress could not reach an agreement to prevent the federal government from shutting down,” said Gary Cooper, executive director of the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation. “The HACN hopes the shutdown is brief and tribal citizens in the Native American Section 184 Loans process are minimally impacted. However, housing programs funded and operated by the Cherokee Nation are business as usual and will continue to serve our citizens because of the sound financial management practices at both the Cherokee Nation and HACN.”

Cherokee Nation-funded housing programs include the New Home Construction Program, Senior Housing Program, Rental Assistance Program, Mortgage Assistance Program and College Housing Assistance Program.
