Winter Alert Update: Anticipated Ice Storm Affects Blood Supply
January 12, 2017 – With a state of emergency already declared for the state of Oklahoma ahead of an anticipated ice storm, Oklahoma Blood Institute is strongly urging donors to make blood donation part of their winter preparedness plan.
Donors who can get out and about safely are encouraged to give blood and help shore up the life-saving blood supply for local hospitals. During inclement conditions, the number of traffic accidents and other weather-related incidents rises, increasing the need for blood.
A few mobile blood drives have already been canceled ahead of the winter weather. However, at this time, all of Oklahoma Blood Institute’s donor centers are scheduled to be open during regular hours Friday, and most mobile drives will be up and running.
Blood donation typically takes only about an hour and one donation saves up to three lives. Those with negative blood types are especially encouraged to give. Platelet donors are also needed, since platelets only have a five-day shelf live. Platelets are used for cancer patients and patients with other life-threatening blood disorders.
Donors can find a donor center or mobile drive in their area by logging on to obi.org, or make an appointment by calling 1-877-340-8777.
Oklahoma Blood Institute provides every drop of blood needed for patients in 165 hospitals, medical facilities and air ambulances statewide.
