Question:
What could cause pain or bleeding after intercourse?
Answer:
Pain and bleeding should not occur after intercourse. There are, however, a few reasons that it may happen. In women who have gone through menopause, the lack of estrogen can cause the tissue to tear and bleed. A cervical polyp or lesion may cause bleeding after intercourse. Pain and bleeding may also occur with certain positions or if the couple is very vigorous. Some women experience pain around the vaginal opening and this is called vestibulitis. This is treated with therapy, surgery or medications. If you ever experience pain or bleeding after intercourse, you should contact your doctor.
