Question: I was diagnosed and treated for an upper respiratory infection over two weeks ago. I continue to have a persistent cough. Do I need to be concerned by this? Answer: The majority of upper respiratory infections (URIs) are caused by viruses and typically last for 10 to 14 days. However, sometimes the cough can last longer. In fact, it is not uncommon for the cough to last for several weeks. In most cases, no treatment is needed. However, if the cough is worsening or you are having trouble breathing, you should be checked by your primary care physician. I usually tell people to give themselves about two weeks to get over a URI on their own. At that point, if it is not improving, it’s a good idea to get checked out.
