On the west side of Skiatook, housed in a small building next to a donut shop is where you will find Mac’s Barbeque.
Check-ins on friends Facebook pages had me wondering what we had been missing, so we took the short drive to Skiatook to find out just what that might be.
I did a little research on Mac’s on the way there. Info from their Facebook page reads as follows:
“Mac’s was started in 1985 by Mike McMillan in Skiatook, Oklahoma. He quickly grew his reputation through local and national competitions winning a variety of awards, including the prestigious American Royal and the Jack Daniels invitational.
At Mac’s, we take pride in our barbeque. It is no frills, just premium meats and ingredients cooked the old fashioned way over hickory and pecan wood using our homemade rub. Our award winning sauce is made fresh weekly and is our own recipe. It has become a staple part of the Mac’s tradition and taste.”
Another Facebook post boasts they smoke an average of 912 pounds of meat ad day, which made me think they were doing something right.
When you walk in you will find a cute little restaurant with small town country charm. There are only eight booths and one long table, with a couple of picnic tables housed out front.
The menu was spread out on four blackboard menus overhead. Rather than taking time to read everything I decided to just order from the first board.
I chose the combo dinner ($12.95) . It comes with either two or three meats and two sides. I chose chopped beef and ribs with baked beans and potato salad. Our party also chose a BBQ Bologna Sandwich and another Combo dinner with ribs, bologna, pasta salad and campfire potatoes. They gave us a number and we picked it up at the window when ready.
Food is served on a large paper covered metal tray and included two slices of white bread with the combo meals. I immediately knew I would have leftovers as the portions were huge.
The Sauce: The ribs (3) came with a light drizzle of mild BBQ sauce on them which was sweet, but not too sweet and delicious. The hot BBQ on the table was equally delicious, with just enough kick to taste it, but mild enough to enjoy it with whatever you put it on. The ribs were tender and flavorful. The chopped beef was delicious. I added the hotter sauce to that to kick it up a bit.
The mustard potato salad was whipped and tasted like what I remember at grandmas house as a child. I literally scrapped the container clean. The baked beans were good, but a little to sweet for my taste.
What I thought would be leftovers for tomorrow ended up being eaten by other members of our table. Both said the bologna was great. The bologna sandwich was only $4.40 and piled high with meat. Their sides included a flavorful pasta salad and campfire potatoes which seemed to be a baked mixture of shredded hash browns and cheese.
Though we had no room for desert their menu boasts fresh baked cobbler with or without ice cream ($2.99/$3.75) and bread pudding with butter rum sauce for $2.99.
A popular item seems to be the BBQ Frito Pie, which I intend to try next go round… and yes there will be one.
The Restaurant serves Pepsi fountain products and also has a retro coke ice chest full of glass bottle soda drinks.
I also need to find one of those awesome table top paper towel holders for home!
