Question:
Can I safely have sex during pregnancy?
Answer:
In general, it is okay to have sex during pregnancy. You may find that certain positions are not comfortable while pregnant and that is something that you and your partner should explore.
If you have any unknown vaginal bleeding or have what’s known as a “placenta previa” you should not place anything in the vagina. A placenta previa is a condition in which the placenta covers the cervical opening. This can lead to heavy bleeding if disrupted. You should also note that you may have light spotting or cramping after intercourse, but there should not be bleeding like a period. If this occurs, you need to see your healthcare provider or go to the ER if after hours. A final word of caution is if you experience preterm labor that has been stopped. Sexual activity/breast stimulation can cause uterine contractions and should be avoided.
