Spread the love

Some kids have more to overcome in their childhood than most people ever see. Nic is one of those kids. Nic has struggled with behavioral issues after growing up in an abusive home. Nic was medicated, taken to therapy and hospitals, and often felt like no one wanted him.

His grandmother stepped in as his caregiver. She loves him and wants him to be happy, healthy and safe. A suggestion from Nic’s teacher brought them through our doors and they never looked back. While other places weren’t willing to work with Nic, the Y welcomed him with open arms, standing by the commitment to nurture the potential of every child and teen. His grandmother told us, “When I heard, ‘This is what we do here—we help kids!’ I knew from that moment we were in the right place and fell in love with it all.”

Summer counselors worked with Nic’s grandmother to develop a behavioral plan to help get him off the medications. Throughout the summer, Nic was able to enjoy weeks of fun, crafts, swimming and building friendships. His experience at the Y last summer has helped in him this school year as well; instead of attending only half-days, he goes to school all day and is making straight As.

nicAt the YMCA Owasso, you’re not just a member of the facility; you’re part of a cause. With a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, improving health and well-being, and giving back and supporting our neighbors, your membership gives you and your community the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

The most important measure of the YMCA is the impact it has on the lives of the people and communities it serves. Together, these groups find a place of welcome and belonging at the YMCA – an organization that builds strong kids, strong families and strong communities. The YMCA positively impacts people of all ages, races, faiths and economic backgrounds.

The Owasso Family YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign raises funds so that no child or family is ever turned away from YMCA programs or membership because they are unable to pay.

Each month the Owasso Family YMCA provides over $16,000 in assistance to families and individuals that can not afford to be a part of the YMCA and the programs we offer. The Owasso Y will provide over $200,000 in assistance in 2013.  Programs like these would not be possible without the support of dedicated donors like US Cellular, a proud to supporter of the Owasso YMCA Strong Kid’s Campaign.

Our goal is to continue to provide the following valuable services in the year to come:

Summer Day Camp

Aquatics & Swim Lessons

Active Older Adult Programs

Before & After School Programs

Health and Wellness For All

Family Programs

Youth Sports

Fitness Classes

Child Watch
