Owasso Police Officers Make a Bad Situation Better…….

In February of 2013, Nathan Mitcham, who was a special needs student at Owasso High School made local and national news. He was the Owasso Rams Basketball team manager and his classmates wanted him to have at least one chance to dress out for a game before he graduated. The community took their quest “#dressnathanout” to Twitter. After Nathan’s story went viral, with everyone from Kevin Durant, Carrie Underwood and Toby Keith spreading the word, the OSSAA made an exception. Nathan scored eight points in that game including two three-pointers, helping Owasso beat Sand Springs 75-55.

This past Saturday, Nathan, who is totally dependant on his bicycle for transportation to and from work, came out of his house and found that his bike had been stolen. His family and local officer have been searching for it all week. They did not come up with the stolen bicycle, but a plan to help him out instead.

Owasso Police Officers Mike Barnes and Buddy Pales made a trip to Owasso Walmart Friday afternoon to purchase Nathan a new bike (and a new bike lock.)  They used some of the funds raised  for their “Cops for Kids” program to make the purchase. Owasso Walmart offered them a discount while purchasing, and they were then on their way to surprise Nathan at his home.

Nathan’s mother said they were completely devistated when the bicycle was stolen,  and were so grateful for the officers help.

According to Nathan’s father, Nathan had no clue what was going on.  He was surprised and excited with his new gift, and quickly took it for a test run.
Nathan still loves Owasso Rams Basketball. He is a 2013 Owasso High School graduate,  but continues to  work as a graduate assistant for the basketball team, as well as holding a full time job.

Great job OPD!
