The 2014 Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech for Tulsa is scheduled for Saturday, October 18th at LaFortune Park. It will start over by the baseball batting cages. Each child has their own secure page for family and community members to join their team and walk with them to show support. The money from these walks help to buy 100 iPads for children with Apraxia to help them with their speech “voice”. Money also raised helps to bring in some of the top SLP’s in the country trained on Apraxia to the National conference to educate other SLP’s and parents alike on effective ways to treat and help with Apraxia. Daniele Harrell from Talala, Oklahoma has a testiomny of her own and it can be read below:
“My three year old was diagnosed at age 2 with mild Apraxia, an expressive language delay with motor planning issues. We live in Talala and my two oldest boys attend Oologah. I am one of the moms helping to coordinate the walk with CASANA (Childhood Apraxia Speech Association of North America) out of Pennsylvania. We currently have Team Josiah that we are selling shirts for in Oologah colors through the 30th. All of the proceeds go directly to Josiah’s walk fundraising goal. The shirts would be in by the 14th Of October, just in time for the walk. Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a specific speech disorder that seriously interferes with a child’s ability to develop clear speech. CAS impairs a child’s ability to plan the movements of the lips, tongue, jaw, etc. that are needed for speech. Children with CAS generally have a good understanding of language-they know what they want to say-but have difficulty learning or carrying out the complex movements that underlie speech.”
