Question:
What is the appropriate age for a woman to begin getting mammograms?
Answer:
A mammogram is a standard screening procedure used to detect breast cancer. Routine mammograms should be started at the age of 40. Different doctors use different criteria to determine frequency of mammograms between the ages of 40 and 50. We recommend getting screened every year or every other year, depending on your preference and your personal and family history. If you have a strong family history of breast cancer then we typically recommend getting screened five years before your youngest family member was diagnosed or age 40, whichever is earlier.
