What causes ovarian cysts and the pain associated with them?
Answer:
Ovarian cysts are very common. In fact, all ovulating women have an ovarian cyst every month that regresses if pregnancy does not occur. Problems can arise when an ovarian cysts form and do not go away. Some are due to endometriosis and others can be tumors of the ovary. Your doctor will perform a blood test and/or ultrasounds to evaluate the cyst versus ovarian mass.
The pain can be caused by the size or from the twisting of the ovary, called “ovarian torsion”. Torsion causes sharp colicky pain and may need surgery to correct. Surgery may also be needed for an ovarian cyst/mass. Other times, cysts can be managed expectantly and many times they will resolve on their own.
