Fifth grade students at Rejoice Christian Schools brought history to life during “The Living Museum” on Monday.
Students in fifth grade library classes chose a biography to read and wrote a one-page summary of what they learned about the person’s life. Once their papers were completed, Elementary Media Director Cheryl Golightly helped the students summarize the person’s life into five main facts. The students memorized the facts, dressed as their character and became members of the Living Museum.
When guests walked into the Rejoice Elementary Campus Gymnasium, students in costume were frozen in place. Once the visitors “pressed their buttons” – a sticker on their hand or prop – the characters came to life and told their unique stories. Amelia Earhart, Michael Jordan, Cleopatra and Bethany Hamilton were among the figures represented.
“This activity is effective in so many areas,” Golightly said. “The listeners, both parents and RCS first through fourth graders, learn quick facts about a multitude of people from history. The students learn to love the biography genre of books and gain confidence in their speaking skills as they present over and over.”
Golightly said she was thrilled with the hard work students put in to the presentations.
“The fifth graders at RCS always surprise me with how detailed they get in their costumes and how well they bring their characters to life,” she added. “It was so much fun for everyone.”
