Mary Ellen Leigh was born September 30, 1936, in Ponca City, Oklahoma, to Oscar Henry Gehlert and Freda Backhuas Gehlert. She died Monday, May 16, 2022, in Owasso, Oklahoma, at the age of 85 years. Mary completed her secondary education in Newkirk, Oklahoma, and was a graduate of Newkirk High School. She had lived in Owasso, Oklahoma since the early 1960’s and worked for T.G.&Y. She later worked with Target and K-Mart in Tulsa before her retirement from K-Mart. Mary was also a loving mother to her children and was a homemaker caring for her family. She was a strong woman of faith and was a longtime member of Faith Lutheran Church in Owasso. She enjoyed a variety of pastimes, especially reading. As her eyesight began to diminish, her husband James would read to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Freda Gehlert, a grandson, Michael Gray and his wife Tristan.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, May 22, 2022, at Mowery Funeral Service in Owasso. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 23, 2022, at Faith Lutheran Church in Owasso with Pastor Mark Neumann officiating. Serving as casket bearers will be Kenneth Yount, Mike Barnes, Randy Brock, and Roope Henry. Committal service and interment will follow at Graceland Memorial Park Cemetery in Owasso. Arrangements and services were entrusted to Mowery Funeral Service of Owasso.
