Betty Jean Brooks, resident of Owasso, passed away Monday evening, September 2, 2013 at the Autumn Wood Memory Care Center in Claremore. She was 80 years of age. Betty was born November 25, 1932 in Toledo, Ohio to Roy G. and Dorothy J. (Zarembski) Bowersock. She was raised and received her education in Toledo, graduating from DeVilbiss High School. When Betty was eighteen, the family moved to Tulsa. She shortly thereafter moved to Ft. Worth, Texas. While there, Betty was united in marriage to Edward Barton Brooks on December 30, 1954. They made their home in Texas until moving to Ada, Oklahoma in 1966. She and Edward moved to Owasso in 2001 to be nearer to their children. He preceded her in death in 2008.
Betty worked at the Ada Evening News, Ada, OK, for 15 years. She enjoyed community theater and was instrumental in organizing ACT II in Ada in 1978. She remained active with ACT II for over 20 years. Betty also enjoyed sewing and Art and was active with the Hospital Auxiliary while living in Ada.
Those that survive include her children – Carol Barnes of Ponca City, OK, Mark Brooks of Myrtle Beach, SC and Vanessa Kehl of Owasso. Also surviving are 3 grandsons Bryan Barnes of Ponca City, Mark Barnes of Tuscaloosa, AL, Gabriel Brooks of Myrtle Beach, SC; a granddaughter Rachel Kehl of Owasso; 4 great-grandchildren and a brother, Dale Bowersock of Hurst, Texas.
Visitation for Betty will be Thursday, September 5, 2013 from 2pm – 4pm and from 6pm till 8pm at Mowery Funeral Service. Funeral services will be Friday, September 6, 2013 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Mowery Funeral Service with Chad Balthrop officiating.
The family has requested that those wanting to honor Betty’s memory may do so by making contributions to the: Edward Brooks Scholarship Fund, C/O East Central State University, 1100 East 14th Street, Ada, OK 74820. Arrangements and services have been entrusted to Mowery Funeral Service of Owasso.
