Question:
Are there any over-the-counter medications I could take to ease a heavy flow?
Answer:
There are no over-the-counter meds that can really help decrease a heavy menstrual flow. If you have regular periods with heavy flow, and other possible causes such as fibroids, polyps, or bleeding/endocrine disorders have been ruled out, there are some options available. You could start oral contraceptives to help decrease flow. Another option is a progesterone IUD. Finally, there is a non-hormonal medication called Lysteda that blocks one of the steps in the bleeding cascade. You take the medication with the onset of menses for up to five days after starting. As always, speak with your heathcare provider to determine what options are best for you.
