Question:
What over-the-counter (OTC) products are recommended to help relieve the pain from a bad sunburn?
Answer:
I should start by saying that the best way to relieve a sunburn is to not burn in the first place. Don’t forget the importance of sunscreen and reapplication. However, since accidents do occur, there are some options available over the counter to help relieve discomfort. OTC analgesics such as ibuprofen or Tylenol actually work quite well to relieve the discomfort of sunburns. They should only be taken as directed on the label. Another frequently overlooked aspect of controlling the symptoms is simple skin moisturization. Using a good quality moisturizer without any extra coloring or scents can help relieve the itch that is associated with sunburns. There are also several OTC products that have a combination of aloe and lidocaine that can help moisturize and numb the skin surface. Hope this helps!
