Question:
I am a 46-year old male and I have developed a small, white bump on the mid to right side of my lower lip. It’s been there for about six weeks and doesn’t seem to be getting any bigger nor does it seem to be going away. Do you have any idea what that might be or how I can get rid of it?

Answer:
There are not a lot of possible causes for this type of lesion on the lip. Most of the time, a white abnormality on the lip represents a precancerous lesion such as an Actinic Keratosis or Leukoplakia. Both of these lesions are easily treated when caught early. Actinic Keratosis is usually caused by chronic sun exposure or sunburns. Leukoplakia is usually caused by chronic irritation such as smoking or dental problems. Either way, they should be evaluated by your primary care physician or a dermatologist.
