Cherokee Nation calendar of events in December

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Cherokee Nation is opening its doors to visitors for the holidays by hosting an open house on Dec. 12. Sequoyah High and the Cherokee Immersion Charter School are also putting on programs to celebrate Christmas in the month of December. The following are the Cherokee Nation calendar of events:

Dec. 2

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Tribal Registration help with citizenship applications in Jay at the Sam Hider Health Center, 1015 Washbourne St. 918-253-4271.

Dec. 3

5:30 to 8 p.m. – Tribal Councilors Tina Glory-Jordan, Joe Byrd and David Walkingstick will host a community meeting for District 1 at the Hulbert Community Center, north edge of the Hulbert Schools campus. Flu shots will be available and Cherokee Nation departments will be on hand. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and provided by the Tribal Councilors. 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. – Tribal Councilor Victoria Mitchell Vazquez will host a community meeting for District 11 at the Vinita Health Center, 27371 S. 4410 Rd. Information on the Cherokee Nation and dinner will be provided. For more information contact Victoria-vazquez@cherokee.org

Dec. 4

6 to 8 p.m. – The Cherokee Arts Center in Tahlequah will host a loom weaving class every Wednesday, taught by National Treasure Dorothy Ice. The six-week course costs $40 per class, with $80 due at registration. Dec. 5

6:30 to 8:30 p.m. – The Cherokee Arts Center in Tahlequah hosts a metalsmithing class every Thursday, taught by Steve Mashburn. Dec. 6

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Families that qualify for coat vouchers and have not yet picked them up can get them at the Human Services office in the W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex, 17675 S. Muskogee Ave., Tahlequah. For more information, call Angela King at 918-453-5000, ext. 5266.

Dec. 9

11 a.m. – Cherokee Nation and Cherokee Nation Businesses host the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Cooweescoowee Health Center, two miles west of Route 75 on W. 2900 Road, Ochelata.

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Tribal Registration help with citizenship applications in South Coffeyville, 215 Oklahoma St. 918-563-9329.

Dec. 11

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Tribal Registration help with citizenship applications in Muldrow at the Muldrow Cherokee Community Center, 603 N. Main St. 918-427-5440.

Dec. 12

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. – The Cherokee Nation is opening its doors to visitors with a Christmas Open House. Several Cherokee Nation departments will have festive booths set up to provide visitors with information on services. Santa Claus and other Christmas characters will be on hand to take photos. 6:30 p.m. – Sequoyah High School’s theatre department presents Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” dinner theatre in the school cafeteria, 17091 S. Muskogee Ave inTahlequah. Turkey and dressing will be served. Admission is $5 and $2 for children under 12. Another show will be Dec. 13 at the same time. Dec. 13

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Tribal Registration help with citizenship applications in Sallisaw at the Sallisaw sub-office, 110 N. Elm St. 918-775-6226.

5 p.m. – Gifts for the Cherokee Nation Angel Tree must be turned in to the Cherokee First station in the W.W. Keeler Complex, 17675 S. Muskogee Ave., Tahlequah. For more information, call 918-266-5626 ext. 7720 or 918-458-6900.

Dec. 16

6 p.m. – The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council meeting will be held in the Tribal Council chambers at the W.W. Keeler Complex, 17675 S. Muskogee Ave., Tahlequah.

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Tribal Registration help with citizenship applications in Collinsville at the Cherokee Nation Tag Office, 105 E. Main St. 918-371-3265.

Dec. 17

Dec. 18

9 a.m. – Cherokee Nation Immersion Charter School to put on “Down Home Traditional Christmas” program at Sequoyah High School’s old gym in Tahlequah, 17091 S. Muskogee Ave. Program is free and open to the public. For more information, call 918-207-4900.

5 p.m. – Deadline to make appointment to audition for open slots in the Cherokee National Youth Choir. Auditions will be held Jan. 7 and 9, 2014. Applicants must be in sixth through 11th grades, Cherokee citizens, and willing to learn Cherokee and attend weekly rehearsals.
