08/25/2018 – A former Journalist with the Owasso Reporter Newspaper and Oologah High School teacher is under investigation after authorities say she had sex with an under age student on multiple occasions.
Smart resigned her role with the newspaper to take a teaching job in Oologah.
The Rogers County Sheriff’s Office reports deputies booked Haylie C. Smart, age 29, into jail on Friday afternoon. Smart is charged with second-degree rape of a 17 year old student.
According to court records, Smart had a sexual relationship with a student for several months during the 2017-2018 school year.
Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation investigators received a report on May 22 that Smart, was having an inappropriate relationship with a male student of hers. Witnesses told OSBI that the two were openly affectionate at the school in front of others.
An affidavit of probable cause said Smart engaged in sexual intercourse with the student in her classroom on several occasions as well as outside of the school.
OSBI said the investigation showed phone calls between Smart and the student and that Smart had confided in a friend about the relationship.
Rogers County Jail Records show she was booked and released on $12,500 bond.
Oologah-Talala School District has issued the following statement on the matter:
“The top priority of the Oologah-Talala School District is the health, safety and security of our students and staff. The School District previously employed Haylie Smart as a High School teacher. Ms. Smart’s employment ended on May 29, 2018. The Oologah-School District will not make any comment regarding Ms. Smart’s previous employment as personnel matters are confidential. Moreover, the School District has no comment regarding any criminal matters regarding Ms. Smart.”
