Joann A. Chew was born July 29, 1926, in Joplin Missouri, to Hiram Walker Atherton and Mary Ruby Atherton Garde. She died Sunday, February 18, 2024, in Owasso, Oklahoma, at the age of 97 years. Joann was reared and educated in Joplin and was a graduate of Joplin High School. During that time, she was a member of the National Honor Society. She continued her education after high school attending business school. She was married June 13, 1948, in Joplin, Missouri, to Kenneth Chew. Joann spent her professional working life as a telegram operator and finance assistant with Western Union. She balanced her work with that of homemaker caring for her family. Joann was a longtime faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Joplin. She enjoyed a variety of pastimes including spending time gardening and birdwatching.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Kenneth Chew, two brothers, Dale Atherton and Earl Atherton, and one sister, Merry Cabetage.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, February 22, 2024, at Mowery Funeral Service in Owasso. Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 23, 2024, at the Mowery Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Leonard Pirtle officiating. Final resting place will be next to her husband at Osborne Memorial Cemetery in Joplin, Missouri. Arrangements and services were entrusted to Mowery Funeral Service of Owasso.
