Karen Grace DeHaan, former longtime Tulsa resident, passed from this life on Saturday afternoon, August 6, 2016 at the Homestead of Owasso. She was 76 years of age. Karen was born May 10, 1940 at Childers, Nowata County, Oklahoma to Rueben and Mildred (Hicks) Walton. She was raised on the family farm and attended Childers schools, graduating from Childers high school. Karen continued her education at Northeastern State College (now University) at Tahlequah, OK where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Education. On July 2, 1964, she and Richard DeHaan were united in marriage in Tulsa. They made their home in Tulsa for 35 years where she taught in various elementary schools for the Tulsa Public School system; and later taught for four years at Metro Christian. They had made their home in Broken Arrow since 2008. During her teaching career, Karen mostly taught fifth grade classes. Karen and Richard were longtime members of Boston Avenue Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening and doing interior home design.
Those that are left to cherish her memory are her husband Richard of the home in Broken Arrow; her daughter Lisa Peterson and husband John of Owasso; two grandchildren Eric and Nicole Peterson; a brother Jim Walton and wife Doris of Fayetteville, Arkansas and a sister Marilyn Fahrner and husband Jack of Owasso. Karen was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Noreen Lehr.
Private family services will be held at a later date at Boston Avenue Methodist Church with inurnment in the church columbarium. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mowery Funeral Service of Owasso. www.moweryfs.com
