Kenneth Deacon Coulter was born October 18, 1953, in St. Paul, Minnesota to Philip Roy Coulter and Joan Willing Burnett Coulter. He died Saturday, November 16, 2024, in Owasso, Oklahoma, at the age of 71 years. Ken completed his secondary education in Joplin, Missouri, and graduated from Parkwood High School. He continued his studies at Missouri Southern College. Ken was a veteran of the armed forces and served his country honorably with the United States Navy. He was married January 15, 1974, in Carthage, Missouri, to Brenda Lee Huber.
Ken, Brenda, and their two-year-old son Tommy came to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1980. Tulsa was booming with oil success and several high-rise commercial buildings were being constructed in downtown Tulsa. Ken’s first project was Tower 1 of the Williams Buildings, where he became a journeyman glazer, and was later promoted to estimator at Robinson Glass Contracting. In 1983, Megan was a new addition to the family, and in 1985, Ken and Brenda opened Coulter and Company. Tommy joined the company in 2007 and after working alongside his parents for several years, became the second-generation owner of the company in 2016. Ken retired a few years later.
The Coulter family also entered the restaurant business in 2010, opening Smoke on Cherry Street in Tulsa. The business later expanded in Owasso with Smoke on Main Street and MAD Eats restaurants as part of the Seven6Main development which opened in 2018.
Ken enjoyed a variety of pastimes during his life. Motocross and riding dirt bikes was an early and influential part of his life. As a young man he found refuge riding among the chat piles of Prosperity near his home in Joplin. Ken later competed twice at the Mint 400, a 400-mile off-road, rough terrain course race outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. Riding remained a way of life as Tommy competed in the Oklahoma motocross state series for several years.
Ken was also an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. He enjoyed spending time playing golf, as well as boating on the river and Beaver Lake. Ken left a positive and lasting impression on anyone that had the opportunity to get to know him.
