Merle Haggard is one of American music’s greatest artists, releasing more than 40 No. 1 singles and earning more than 20 awards in a career that has spanned five decades.

Haggard was born in 1937 outside of Bakersfield, Calif., after his parents had relocated to the area from Checotah, Okla. His father, Jim, found work as a carpenter for the Santa Fe Railroad, and the family lived in an old boxcar that was converted into a home.

Starting at age 15, Haggard was in and out of jail, including a stint at San Quentin Prison for two years before his 1960 release at age 20. He then joined the Bakersfield Sound of country music as it was just beginning, and his career accelerated.

In 1969, Haggard released “Okie From Muskogee,” which was recorded live at the Muskogee Civic Center. The album earned the ACM award for Album of the Year, and the self-titled single became an instant No. 1 hit and earned the ACM Single of the Year award.

To date, he has released 76 studio albums and 48 compilations. Haggard has released a staggering 96 singles, including the smash hits “Mama Tried,” “Hungry Eyes,” “Workin’ Man Blues,” “The Fightin’ Side of Me” and “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink.”

Haggard has collected numerous industry awards, including five ACM Top Male Vocalist awards, six CMA awards and three Grammys. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame in 1997. In 2010, he was among the honorees at the annual Kennedy Center Honors, which recognizes those in performing arts for their lifetime of contributions to American culture.
