The Owasso Chapter, NSDAR, had Terri Walker and Jo Ratliff as guest speakers for the October meeting on Oct. 7th. They presented “Historically Dressed: Eighteenth Century Ladies Clothing, 1760-1790.” They wore dresses that were representative of the 1700s in the colonies. Women dressed according to the norms of society. They emphasized the normal day of a woman who must dress to meet local and society standards regardless of her station in life. Women also helped women who were not able to meet the needs of normal dress for the period. Terri’s and Jo’s clothes were made according to the styles of the 1700. There were no safety pins, no zippers, and buttons were not used on the dresses. Hats were held on with straight pins. Small white caps were worn over the hair at all times. This was a necessity to keep hair clean, and the hats went over the cap when one went outside.
