The Owasso Chapter of NSDAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) had Lorie Vilbert as guest speaker at the March 4, 2013 meeting.
Lorie Vilbert spoke about the Nursing Profession. She covered the beginning of women in nursing care, with Florence Nightingale’s influence in the healthcare system in Britain starting in 1854. Women were not really considered useful in medicine but with Florence Nightingale’s guidance, and then Clara Barton’s push for better healthcare in the United States, things began to change. Women’s influence in nursing and healthcare brought to the forefront the need for cleanliness and fresh air in the hospital room, as well as doctors and nurses washing their hands after attending each sick patient.
A memorial service was held at the meeting for two DAR sisters who were proud to honor their patriots:
Margaret Helen Pogue Williams– passed 29 May 2012 – Patriot – John Mcdow, SC
Josephine Marie Colbert Stockton – passed 13 Feb 2013 – Patriot – John Brubeck, VA
The next Owasso Chapter DAR meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 1, 2013 at 7pm at the Owasso Community Center. Guest speaker Gail Barbre will show how to retire a flag.
DAR is a lineage based, non-political women’s service organization, whose motto is God, Home and Country. They promote Historic Preservation, Education, and Patriotism.
