Like Father. Like Son.
A retirement ceremony was held this evening at Owasso City Hall for Owasso K-9 Officer Benny, and his K-9 officer offspring, Sampson. Both shepherds retired from service on the same day.
A sudden illness kept Benny from the ceremony tonight, but stories of both dogs and their courageousness were shared by other officers.
Benny has served the Owasso Police Department with his partner Reserve Officer Bobby Sordo, for the past ten years. The pair often toured Owasso Public Schools, teaching children about what they do and why they do it.
Benny was also called to help after the deadly tornado struck Joplin in 2011, recovering 17 bodies from the devastation.
K-9 Officer Sampson, was honored along with his partner, Officer Travis Sellers. Sampson, described as an “aggresive K-9 Officer” has suffered heat stroke and some hip issues, which led to him retiring after 4.5 years of service to the department. Officer Sellers stated his daughter is happy she will get to take care of him full time now.
Sellers has begun training with a new K-9 – ” Gideon” who will join the force in the near future.
