On 03/01/2018 at 8:30PM, Owasso officers were dispatched to a residence in the area of 11800 E 80 PL for a possible kidnapping/extortion.
Family members and friends of Jonathan Davis reported that they had not seen him since the morning of Tuesday February 27th and they began receiving text messages from his cell phone on 03/01/2018, claiming to be from someone who was holding him captive. The messages claimed that physical harm would come to Davis unless money was immediately deposited into a Paypal account. The messages escalated, including descriptions of breaking Davis’ hands/fingers and images that supposedly showed Davis’ injured hands and more threats of physical harm/death unless money was deposited into the account. The messages also threated harm if anyone reported the situation to law enforcement.
OPD contacted the FBI and the US Marshalls for assistance. Local and federal law enforcement pursued leads throughout the evening attempting to locate Davis. At 1:30AM, US Marshalls located Davis inside the River Spirit Casino in Tulsa. Davis was reportedly gambling inside the establishment, alone and apparently unharmed. He was also in possession of his cell phone, from which the messages had allegedly been sent.
Initial findings of the investigation indicate that there was no kidnapping and Davis allegedly carried out the plot himself to obtain money from his family and friends. Davis was transported to the Owasso Police Department, where he was arrested for Extortion and False Reporting of a Crime.
