From the Owasso Police Department:
“OPD has been contacted by a couple of concerned residents this week about scam artists calling/claiming to be from “the IRS”. This scam started making the rounds a few years ago and it seems to pick up in frequency in December/January as the federal tax season begins. The caller generally demands payment via wire transfer/credit card – threatening that an arrest warrant will be issued if the payment isn’t received immediately.
Please be aware that the Internal Revenue Service DOES NOT cold-call people, even if they legitimately owe back taxes, so anyone attempting to solicit funds or identifying information via telephone or email should be viewed suspiciously. Some callers have even been known to ghost their caller ID to make it display “IRS” on the incoming call, even though the call is originating from somewhere overseas.
If you wish to report fraudulent activity/scams, the IRS has asked we refer potential victims to the their website at http://www.irs.gov/…/How-Do-You-Report-Suspected-Tax-Fraud-…”
