12/18/2017 – Students from Owasso High School, Owasso Mid High and Rejoice Christian School were invited by the Owasso VFW Post 7180 to present essays to be judged for the Voice of Democracy essay contest that Veterans of Foreign War sponsors every year.

Two essay entries from the Tulsa area were also received.  The two entries were retrieved from the VFW website and completely done by students themselves. The programs were not shown to them in their schools.

Students from the ninth grade through senior year are invited to submit a written and recorded essay that is 3-5 minutes long on a pre-determined subject.

This years national theme was, “American History: My Hope for America”. Students compete for cash and scholarships worth more than $2 million dollars and a trip to Washington, DC for a chance to compete for a $30,000 scholarship provided by National Veterans of Foreign Wars counsel.

Voice of Democracy Winners:

First Place: Katherine Bates, Augustine Christian School. Tulsa, OK

Second Place: Madison Koerner, Rejoice Christian School , Owasso, OK

Third Place: Kelsey Griffin, Bishop Kelly High School, Tulsa, OK

All three of these students were entered into the District judging contest, and Owasso’s Katherine Bates and Kelsey Griffin placed 2nd and 3rd in the district contest.  Congratulations to both of them.
