Blood donors urgently needed as cancelled appointments blood drives continue to impact supply.

February 19, 2025 – Don’t throw in the towel! We need you in our corner for Round 2! Another wave of winter weather, including below-freezing temperatures and winter precipitation, has forced the extension of Our Blood Institute’s Emergency Blood Shortage systemwide. For the second week in a row, OBI is facing canceled donation appointments and blood drives. The prolonged shortage could impact hospitals and patients desperately in need.

“Our donors are true champions, but this winter weather has hit us with a painful one-two punch,” said Dr. John Armitage, president and CEO of Our Blood Institute. “We’re asking everyone who can safely travel to step into the ring and help us fight this shortage. Patients are counting on you.”

Our Blood Institute is still open and urging donors to reschedule appointments and come in to donate as soon as it’s safe to travel.

Platelet and whole blood donors are urgently needed now more than ever. Platelets only have a shelf life of about five days, requiring a constant refilling of the supply for patients battling cancer, undergoing surgery, or facing traumatic injuries. Whole blood donations are also critical, as winter weather has drastically reduced collections. The need for both donation types never stops, no matter the weather. If you’re eligible, please schedule a donation—whether platelets or whole blood—to help bridge this urgent gap. OBI greatly appreciates its donors who have heard the call and stepped up to donate in recent days.

We need you in our corner for Round 2—come out swinging and help us fight this shortage!

Successful donors will receive a limited-edition, Superhero-themed T-shirt.

We urge all eligible donors to make an appointment today. Your donation is a direct lifeline for those in need. Visit obi.org/emergency to schedule your lifesaving donation now.

Anyone who is healthy and 16 years old* or older can give blood. Appointments to donate can be made online at obi.org or by calling 877-340-8777. Walk-ins are also welcome.
