Record Number of Teams and Athletes Competing
TULSA, Oklahoma – October 1, 2015 – On Wednesday, October 7, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Special Olympics Oklahoma will host the annual state-level Soccer competition at the Owasso Sports Complex, 10320 E. 116th Street North, Owasso, Oklahoma. This year a record number of 50 teams and 500 athletes and their Unified Partners are scheduled to compete.
Teams are coming from as far away as Bethany, Harrah, Mustang, Noble, Poteau, Putnam City, Wagoner and Yukon. There are also several local teams competing from Catoosa, Glenpool, Jenks, Okmulgee, Owasso, Sand Springs, Sperry and Tulsa. Robert Schaefer, Wagoner, is the Special Olympics Oklahoma Soccer Sports Director and will be in charge of the event.
Professional referees are volunteering their time to officiate at this event. The Owasso Soccer Club Board of Directors and the North East Oklahoma Futbol Club have hosted the statewide soccer competition for the past 11 years.
“Spectators are welcome to attend and cheer for the athletes at the annual state-level Soccer Competition,” said John Seals, Special Olympics Oklahoma Sports Director. “Soccer is a Unified® Sport. Teams are made up of athletes with and without intellectual disabilities who compete on the same playing field. The competitions are exciting to watch and we are thankful to the exceptional response from the professional referees who officiate these games.”
