The Oklahoma Stroke & Neurological Institute at Hillcrest Named a Primary Stroke Center

TULSA, OK – During a stroke, the best way to prevent death and reduce the extent of long-term damage is to access timely and effective treatment. And, with more than 610,000 people experiencing a stroke for the first time each year, it is important to know where the nearest certified primary stroke center is located.

The Oklahoma Stroke & Neurological Institute at Hillcrest Medical Center has been named a Primary Stroke Center by DNV.

The DNV Healthcare Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on standards set forth by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association to affirm that participating hospitals address the full spectrum of stroke care – diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education – and establishes clear metrics to evaluate outcomes. Hillcrest is one of only two hospitals accredited as a stroke center in Tulsa.

“During a stroke, time is brain. We have developed a comprehensive, highly-skilled team that understands the importance of implementing the treatment protocols that have been found to provide for the best possible medical outcome,” said Kevin Gross, President and CEO of Hillcrest HealthCare System. “Earning the DNV Primary Stroke Center designation demonstrates the excellent quality of care our patients receive from diagnosis in the emergency room, to inpatient acute or critical care, to rehabilitation in Hillcrest’s Kaiser Rehabilitation Center.”

Located within Hillcrest Medical Center, the Oklahoma Stroke & Neurological Institute includes both acute and intensive care services to provide a personalized treatment plan for every patient.

The stroke care team consists of neurologists, physiatrists, emergency physicians, interventional radiologists, critical care physicians, internal medicine hospitalists, cardiologists, registered nurses and respiratory therapy. Its multidisciplinary team also includes physical, speech and occupational therapists;

dietitians; case managers and social workers; and a stroke program coordinator. All members of the team have received additional training to diagnose and treat all types of stroke.

            “We are proud to have been named a Primary Stroke Center,” said Perri Craven, MD, Medical Director of the Kaiser Rehabilitation Center at Hillcrest. “The accreditation is a formal recognition of the team we have created to provide compassionate and high-quality care to our patients.”
