05/06/2019 – GRAY COUNTY, Texas (KVII) — An early morning crash on Interstate 40, about two miles west of McLean, on Monday involving three vehicles left two people dead and two more injured, one with life-threatening injuries.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, at about 1 a.m., a 2013 Freightliner truck tractor towing a semi-trailer, driven by Justin Khashan, 28, of Amarillo, was traveling east on I-40. Khashan told authorities he saw a single headlight traveling westbound in the eastbound lane towards him.
Khashan said he then pulled onto the shoulder to avoid a 2008 Toyota Camry, driven by Collin Lovelace, 18, of Owasso, Oklahoma. A 2005 Mercury Mountaineer, driven by Fungisai Banda, 33, of Bentonville, Arkansas was also traveling east on I-40 and attempted to pass Khashan when the Camry collided into it head-on in the left lane.
The Mountaineer was thrown into the path of Khashan’s truck, which collided with the driver’s side. The semi and the Camry came to rest in the median. The Mountaineer came to rest in the left lane of I-40.
Banda and Jacob Frogge, 18, of Owasso, Oklahoma, a passenger in the Camry, died on the scene. Both were pronounced deceased by Gray County Justice of the Peace Joe Martinez.
Lovelace was taken to an Amarillo hospital with life-threatening injuries and is in critical condition.
A 2-year-old, of Bentonville, Arkansas, a passenger in the Mountaineer, was taken to Pampa Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
