Asleep at the Wheel comes to Claremore July 11
Western swing band to play at Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs
CLAREMORE, Okla. – Dance the night away on July 11 at the Dog Iron Saloon inside Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs, as Asleep at the Wheel takes the stage to perform four decades of their hits.
The free admission show begins at 7 p.m. with the Tulsa Playboys and Asleep at the Wheel follows at 9 p.m.
Asleep at the Wheel has stayed true to their American country roots since the 1970s. For the last four decades, they have continued to introduce new audiences to the western swing genre the band plays and loves.
“We’re a dance band,” Wheel front man, Ray Benson said. “That’s what we’re about, and that’s plenty.”
The band broke out with their 1973 debut album, “Comin Right at Ya,” that included the Bob Wills cover “Take Me Back To Tulsa.”
Asleep at the Wheel has released more than 20 albums and charted more than 20 singles on the country Billboard charts, including the Eric Clapton cover “Lay Down Sally,” “Route 66,” “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie,” “Walk On By,” “House Of Blue Lights” and “The Letter That Johnny Walker Read,” which peaked at No. 10.
Throughout the years, Benson has had the honor of performing on stage with other fellow country stars, including Carrie Underwood, Merle Haggard, Rascal Flatts and Willie Nelson.
Asleep at the Wheel has received many awards throughout their career, including “Touring Band of the Year,” “Lifetime Achievement in Performance,” “Best Country and Western Band” by Rolling Stone and eight Grammy awards.
Along with their recording career, Asleep at the Wheel stars in a musical tribute to Bob Wills, which was co-written by Benson. The play honoring the legendary King of Western Swing is performed around the country.
