Question:
At what age should my daughter get her first gynecology exam?
Answer:
Girls should have their first gynecology visit between the ages of 13 and 15. The first visit may not include an exam and just be a discussion with the doctor about her health history. She should also be prepared to talk about her menstrual history and any sexual history. If she is asymptomatic (showing no evidence of disease), a physical exam and external genital exam are performed. This involves the physician looking at the vulva.
Generally, a pelvic exam is not done on the first visit. The exception to this would be if she is having problems such as abnormal bleeding or pelvic pain. If she is sexually active, she will be screened for certain sexually transmitted infections. These tests can mostly be done on a urine sample. Her vaccinations will also be reviewed.
A pap smear is not indicated until she is 21. The exception to this is if certain medical conditions are uncovered during the health history discussion of the visit. Early access to healthcare and discussions with an OB/Gyn can help a young woman be strong and healthy for years to come.
